My great great grandfather Joel Axtens … had a son by Mary Atkins at Sutton Montis in approx 1814/15 named John. John came to Australia in 1841 on the "Portland". I have his shipping records.
I have been researching Joel for about 7 years and eventually found him in various census under different names according to the person who transcribed the census.
I have a copy of Joel's baptism, his marriage to Mary Atkins in 1837 and his death certificate as well as Mary's.
My enquiry is would you have any additional information regarding his family, his parents etc.

Walter Raymond was born in a humble cottage in Yeovil in 1852. His father, Cuthbert, worked in the glove industry in the town, although most of his ancestors had been farmers. When he was 2 years old his mother and sister died of typhoid and Walter was sent to Marston Magna to live with his grandparents. He also had typhoid but was nursed back to health. His grandfather soon died and he and his grandmother went to live in the school house, his aunt being the village school mistress. There he grew to love the countryside and gained a knowledge of natural history from his own teacher.
Cuthbert remarried and Walter returned to Yeovil only soon to be sent to school at Sherborne. His stepmother, Matilda, had six children of her own but brought Walter up as her own. Cuthbert built up his own glove manufacturing business, which Walter entered about 1875. Walter was keen on reading and natural science and Cuthbert had thought of sending him to university but felt that he would be better off in the glove trade. The gloves were sewn from calf and kid skins by women in cottages in the surrounding countryside. Walter recalled visits to these cottages in later novels. He spent more and more time in such visits and lost interest in the factory.
In 1878 Walter met Mary Johnston and married her the same year. Cuthbert retired from business in 1882 and moved to Southampton, leaving his house in Yeovil to Walter and Mary. They remained there for ten years. They produced five daughters and three sons, much to the delight of both, as were later grandchildren. Sons Cuthbert and Walter were sent to Blundell’s School at Tiverton and later emigrated to New Zealand. The work of the glove factory became more complex and demanding and in 1892, at the age of 40, Walter gave it up to embark on a literary career. He had often written articles and poems for local papers and in 1888 his book Misterton’s Mistake was also published locally.
Walter and Mary moved to Preston Pluknett so that he could devote himself to country writing. His next published works were Taken at His Word and Gentleman Upcott’s Daughter. The latter, probably his best novel, was the first under the pseudonym of ‘Tom Cobbleigh’. Walter had earned the nickname of ‘Uncle’ because of ‘Uncle Tom Cobbleigh’ in ‘Widdecombe Fair’, which he often used to sing. In quick succession came Young Sam and Sabina, Tryphena in Love and Love and Quiet Life. The books were very simply written. Walter never attempted involved plots, philosophical analyses or wordy descriptions. However, his writing was spontaneous and charming, suited the Somerset country life that was the subject of the writing and won much critical acclaim.
Around 1900 Walter began to take an interest in the work of the Dorset dialect poet William Barnes. The two men wrote about similar subjects and in a similar, simple style. Walter gave many recitals of Barnes’ poems and lectures on dialect and folk lore in various parts of the country, including the Exmoor area. These brought him acclaim from Thomas Hardy. His novels, however, were of varying quality and he found it difficult to write to order.
In 1905 Walter moved his family to London but he never cared to stay long there and, with a friend, Mr F Maggs, took the lease of a cottage at Withypool, behind the Royal Oak inn. He said: “I cannot loose connection with Somerset, so have taken a very quaint old cottage on Exmoor, eight miles from any station, at a place called Withypool. Very quaint. I shall have to put it in a book.” That he did in The Book of Simple Delights. The first few chapters describe the taking of and settling into the cottage. From then until 1914 he spent much of his time at Withypool, walking on the moors, fishing in the Barle and observing the people and their ways. Most of his subsequent books were written there or at Knighton Farm, where friends would put a quiet room or empty house at his disposal. He would often spend his evenings in the Royal Oak, listening in silence to the village gossip. Here he had the happiest time of his life, in which he had undisturbed time for writing and study. His family often spent their holidays with him, whilst he would return to London from time to time.
At that time Withypool was still a rich source of folklore. Cecil Sharp came there to search for folk songs and Walter joined him, along the Rev. F Etherington of Minehead and the Rev Charles Marson of Hambridge. They talked to the gypsies still common on Exmoor and some of Cecil Sharp’s best known songs were discovered in that area. Walter was also interested in sketching – in pen and ink, watercolour and pastel – and artist friends came to stay with him from time to time. In addition he had a keen interest in historic buildings and archaeology and was involved in several digs, including that of the stone circle on Withypool Common. In 1906 he had published A School History of Somerset, later republished as A Short History of Somerset, which became a long used text. He was a long and active member of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society.
Mary was not in good health and in 1910, after a bout of serious illness, she was moved to a nursing home in Southampton, where she had family. She never fully recovered and died there in 1912. Walter then divided his time between his daughter, Gladys, in London and his cottage at Withypool. His distress at the death of his wife led to the publication of a philosophical book A Wayfaring Soul. Although he regarded it as his best work, it was not understood by his usual audience. It was his final book, much of the remainder of his career being spent writing articles in journals and lecturing.
Walter continued his literary activities until the First World War, when demand, especially for his lectures, all but ceased. In 1915 he went to live with Gladys in Kensington and started work as a clerk in a London office. In 1917 he moved to Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight, to be near another daughter, Mrs Bradford. Soon Gladys moved to Southampton and he spent time there cleaning at the YMCA. By 1920 he and Gladys had moved again, to Nether Stowey. He took a house there and at the same time relinquished the cottage at Withypool, which he seldom visited again, although he never loved anywhere quite as much. The cottage has now been much modernised and is known as 'Raymond's Cottage'. At the same time he began research into children’s singing games. He gave many lectures on the subject, often illustrated by children enacting the games. This led to a broader interest in Somerset folk dances and customs. He became active in the Somerset Folk Society and wrote articles for the Somerset Folk Press.
Gladys returned to London and, finding life in Nether Stowey lonely, Walter took a new house in Street. He spent much of the remainder of his life on the promotion of his novel Two Men o’ Mendip as a play. After years of effort, he managed to arrange for its production locally, then in London, although it was never the success that he had hoped. In 1930 he had a stroke and spent the remainder of his life being nursed by his daughters in Street and Southampton. Walter died in Southampton in 1931. After cremation, his ashes were buried with his wife in Yeovil cemetery.

1.5.4.3.5 Cuthbert Axtens (1819…1892) m. Martha Ellen Surridge (1829…1909)

Martha Ellen Axtens née Surridge died 17 February 1909 at Lambeth.
An excellent account of this family by Friends of West Norwood Cemetery member Barbara Chick, based on material from Madeline Storr (daughter of John Cuthbert Axtens), was published in the FOWNC Newsletter 24 in October 1995.
The group of Axtens/Boys-Tombs graves stand in square 24 of West Norwood Cemetery, beside the road leading down from the crematorium to the Greek Cemetery. Cuthbert Axtens, whose grave is on the right of the group, was the first arrival in London of a group of London drapers, all members of his or his wife's family. The son of a Somerset dairyman, he came to London in the mid-1830s to take up an apprenticeship as a draper at Swan & Edgar. [William Edgar (1791-1869)
is buried at Norwood: square 52, grave 12,138.] His Sundays were spent with his aunt and uncle, Cuthbert and Sarah Raymond, also up from Somerset. His uncle was established as a cheesemonger in Finsbury Place.
In 1849 Cuthbert Axtens was sent by his Aunt Raymond to Paddington Station to meet a young lady, Martha Surridge, who was coming up to London from Devon to become apprenticed to a court milliner in Maddox Street. Cuthbert is said to have joked that he would willingly "meet her and marry her", which indeed is just what he did. Martha's father, a farmer, had died two years previously leaving a legacy to each of his children, to set them up in a business or career of their choice. With Martha's legacy and Cuthbert's savings (£500 each), they were able to buy their own drapery business at 226 Kennington Park. Road. They were married on 9 August 1851 at St James Piccadilly, which had been their local church in their apprentice days. After the ceremony, they spent the day at Hampton Court by way of a honeymoon, arriving back at the shop just before closing time at 10 pm for a wedding supper on the premises.
Cuthbert and Martha had five children, all born and brought up at 226 Kennington Park Road: James Cuthbert, John Surridge, Ellen Mary, William Raymond and Walter Henry, the last of whom died in childhood. Not surprisingly, in 1870 the family moved from the shop to live at 170 Kennington Park Road. Other members of Martha's family had also settled in London and set up drapery businesses in Hackney, Kilbum and Edgware Road; most of them are buried at Highgate.
By 1871, Cuthbert's business had expanded into neighbouring premises and he was employing ten assistants, among whom were at least two of his Axtens nephews. In due course, his elder sons James and John entered the business, but it could not accommodate William, who borrowed £1,000 from his father in 1887 to buy into partnership with Cornelius Quin (1830-1902); the latter had had a drapery shop at 430 Brixton Road since 1873. The business subsequently prospered under the name of Quin & Axtens, although Comelius Quin sold out of the partnership after a few years. Nothing further is known of him, except that he is buried at Norwood (square 96, grave 13,098).
One by one William Axtens bought up the whole block of shops between Ferndale Road and Stockwell Road (in one case taking a law suit to the House of Lords), and combined them to become a well-known department store. In 1889 he married Mabel Letitia Green, a court dress-maker (and member of the Green family, makers of chocolate blancmange), at Christ Church Streatham. They lived first on Brixton Hill, moving later to St Margaret's, 13 Leigham Court Road, Streatham (now the Constitutional Club).
Returning, however, to Kennington Park Road and the fortunes of the rest of the Axtens family: John Axtens had married Ellen Osman in 1882, and his sister Ellen had married Edward Boys-Tombs, a blouse manufacturer, in 1886. Both weddings took place at Claylands Congregational Chapel near the Oval, where their father Cuthbert was a deacon, John was a member of the choir and Ellen was a Sunday School teacher. In earlier times. a fellow deacon with Cuthbert Axtens had been John Doulton senior (1793-1873) of the Lambeth pottery firm (buried in square 40, grave 1,808 at 7 Norwood); and the Rev James Baldwin Brown (1820-1884) had been the minister for 24 years (buried in square 40, grave 7,167). After some years of neglect, Claylands Chapel has been restored and is now in use as offices.
Cuthbert Axtens died in 1892, and a few months later his daughter Ellen Boys-Tombs died of a heart attack, two weeks after the birth of her fourth child, Marjorie. After her death (and burial in square 24, grave 24,535), her brothers James and John Axtens had their father's body reburied in a grave (24,604) adjacent to hers. Previously Cuthbert had been buried in a grave originally for his infant son Walter (square 10, grave 10,698), and next to the grave of his mother-in-law, Susan Surridge, towards the rear wall of the cemetery. John also in the same year bought the plot in front of Ellen's (grave 24,799) for the future use of his own family, so that no stranger's grave should stand in front of hers.
The two elder Axtens brothers, James and John, continued to run the business at Kennington Park Road. Family legend has it that they were so unhappy as drapers, that each went to work on alternate days, while the other stayed at home to drown his sorrows. So often it is hard to be the son of a successful father. James dropped out after the first year, and nothing further is known of him; he does not appear to be buried at Norwood. John died at his home in Albert Square, Clapham Road in 1899, and subsequently the Kennington business was sold up. A shorter cross was chosen for his grave, so that Ellen's should not be hidden. [It should be remarked that John's daughter, Madeline Storr, recorded most of the family events detailed here.]
Following now the surviving family members into the twentieth century. Cuthbert Boys-Tombs, son of William's late sister Ellen, joined his uncle to become assistant manager of Quin & Axtens shortly before the First World War, a position that was interrupted by service in the RFC. Although the business was bought by the neighbouring department store Bon Marché in 1920, William Axtens remained very much in charge, with Cuthbert Boys-Tombs supervising a complete refurbishment, including a new facade, under his direction. This arrangement continued until 1929, when William retired and the store (together with Bon Marché and Pratts of Streatham) was bought by Selfridges. Neither uncle nor nephew needed to work again. In 1940 the group of stores was acquired by John Lewis, but a year later Quin & Axtens was destroyed by bombing.
Due to his wife Mabel's deteriorating health, William took a suite of rooms in Queen's Hotel, Eastbourne after his retirement, where sadly she took her own life in 1931. She was buried in a grave (27,362) a few yards to the left of the other three Axtens graves, which William had bought in 1897 for a relative of hers. He remained in Eastbourne throughout the 1930s looked after by his chauffeur and companion, but moved at the outbreak of the Second World War to Woodlands Hotel, Sidmouth, where he died in 1956 at the age of 93, leaving an estate of £327,000. William's cremated remains were interred in his grave with his late wife.
*FOWNC member Barbara Chick is a great-granddaughter of Cuthbert Axtens (a granddaughter of Ellen Boys-Tombs). Her family information forming the basis of this article has been supplemented by Brian Bloice's research into the history of the Quin & Axtens store and Jill Dudman's research in the burial register. One of the most pleasing aspects of this article is that all the graves numbered here still have intact tombstones.
1.5.4.3.5.1 James Cuthbert Axtens (1856…1915) m. Alice Elizabeth Cole (c1869… 1936)
The marriage of James Cuthbert Axtens, born 17 April 1856, a son of CUTHBERT AXTENS and his wife MARTHA ELLEN SURRIDGE, and Alice Elizabeth Cole was registered in the Lambeth district in 2q1891. James and Alice had one child:
Irene Alyce Axtens (born c1893, Lambeth; alive in 1936; married Walter Leslie Raymond).
The 1901 census has James (44, retired draper), Alice (31) and Irene (8) at 11 Albert Square, Kennington, Lambeth (St Stephen's parish) with servant Jane Maria Collins (26, single, domestic servant) and Edith Maria Hodde (24, single, domestic cook). The 1911 census shews James (54, draper and merchant), Alice (41, married 19 years, one issue born alive (still living)) and Irene (18, single) still at 11 Albert Square, Kennington, Lambeth with a cook and a housemaid. Electoral Registers [Kennington Div., Vauxhall Ward] shew James living in his house at 11 Albert square, South Lambeth, in 1899, 1906, 1907, 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1915.
